My timing couldn’t have been better. I was passing by the Captain’s Place near Pearisburg, VA on the weekend that the Captain throws his week-end long Hiker Feed. I thought I might just stop in for some pancakes and coffee and press on, but this looked like fun and I stayed the whole day and pitched my tarp for the night. The Captain’s sliver of private property is surrounded by National Forest and bordered by a river on one side. You have to use the zip line to cross the river from the Appalachian Trail to his place. The Captain and his sisters grilled burgers and hot dogs with all the sides and cooked breakfast, too. It was a great weekend for thru-hikers to relax and play games. Thank you Captain. You are a true trail angel.
